Are Natural Perfumes Better Than Synthetic Ones?

Natural perfumes contain natural fragrances that are extracted from plants using methods such as distillation, expression, and extraction. Synthetic perfumes, on the other hand, are the ones whose fragrances are created using synthetically reconstituted essential oils, synthetic nature identical ingredients, and when natural raw materials are chemically modified to have the desired fragrance. But with a lot of people switching to natural products, it becomes one of the thought-provoking questions whether natural perfumes are much better than synthetic ones.

So in this blog, let’s find out if natural perfumes are better than synthetic ones.

What does natural fragrance consist of?

Natural fragrances are the ones that are composed of natural aromatic raw materials. Fractions of essential oils, isolates, exudates, distillate extracts, and volatile concentrates are all examples of natural aromatic raw materials.

Some people even consider natural perfumes without isolates. An isolate is a molecule that was isolated from a natural fragrance material. But for some people, natural perfume is the one that does not have isolates, whether natural or otherwise.

What does synthetic fragrance consist of?

Synthetic fragrances, on the other hand, can be made up of both natural and synthetic aromatics, or they can be entirely synthetic.

Synthetic fragrances use raw materials which have been obtained by modifying natural raw materials or natural identical raw materials or aroma chemicals that do not exist in nature.

Natural versus synthetic fragrance- which one is better?

Well, natural, as well as synthetic fragrances, have unique features. On one hand, natural perfumes are the ones free from parabens and phthalates. They also have a short shelf life as compared to synthetic ones. Because synthetic fragrances generally have a shelf life of 3 to 5 years, on the other hand, natural perfumes come with a best before date, which generally means about 2 years after the bottle opening.

Once the date is due for the natural perfume, it may change in its colour due to the oxidation process, and even the scent can change. It might not be as bold as it used to be.

Natural perfumes are less overpowering than synthetic ones, and they may also not last on the skin as compared to synthetic perfumes. So if you are a fan of bold fragrances that are long-lasting at the same time, then synthetic might be the way for you. However, if reapplying natural perfume throughout the day is not a problem for you and can be considered a check mid-day activity, then you are upper natural perfume.

Natural perfumes can be much cheaper as compared to synthetic ones because they are derived from nature without the use of any petrochemicals. But with the many more synthetic aroma chemicals available, it gives the manufacturer the freedom to create new and unique fragrances every time. So, in terms of technical advantages, synthetic perfumes outperform natural perfumes, but as people value greener products and promote sustainability, the demand for natural perfumes is increasing.
